LEFT IMAGE (hypothyroid person)--------RIGHT IMAGE (EYTHYROID PERSON) The thyroid is a very fragile organ, it is the first to absorb radioactive iodine, leading to a large number of cancer cases that demand the complete removal of the organ.
But what happens when you run out of pills and your life depends on it? Are there alternative ways of getting the hormones that hypothyroid people need?
A NEW RITUAL_ THE NAKED COMMUNION that wants to change the nature of medication taking from commodity to gift.
The final hormones come in various kinds of crystals. These crystals can then grow in several porous materials. The following experiments show what would happen if medication for thyroid patients was integrated in new kinds of days, instead of being in the form of a pill. This would introduce new rituals and routines of medicating.
The NAKED communion
The project focuses around the idea of scarcity and how convivial rituals have the possibility to alleviate scarcity through the sharing of surplus resources. In this case, the project looks at the scarcity of medication in the case of patients with thyroid deficiencies and more specifically, the dramatic increase in people that depend upon hormonal replacement pills. The basic premise is what would happen if instead of counting on the western pharmaceutical system of production and distribution of medicine, there was the emergence of a new kind of sharing economy and convivial rituals that accompany it. How would this new way of acquiring the medicine we need change our relationship with our daily medication-pill taking habits?
In the case of thyroid deceases there are hyper-thyroid and hypo-thyroid people. The former, are the cases where the thyroid is hyperactive, producing too much thyroxine.
